Privacy Policy — Grain.AI

Last updated: 7 September 2026

Grain.AI is developed by Farhadh Khandokar and distributed through Google Play.

What We Collect

By default, nothing. There are no user accounts, no sign-in, no advertising, no third-party analytics and no software development kits that report your usage.

The application contains one optional feature, switched off when you install it, called "Improve accuracy". If you switch it on, the application can send a short calibration summary to a server address that you enter. That summary is:

it turns a photograph into grains;

the median broken share, the proportion of photographs the application refused, and how many samples were of paddy and how many of milled rice;

That is the whole of it, and you can read the exact text on screen before you press Send.

What Is Never Sent

Photographs. Your name or any inspector name. Lot numbers. Centre names. Notes you typed. Your location — the application never requests it. Any identifier belonging to your phone: the random identifier above is created by the application itself, is not derived from your device, your Google account or your advertising ID, and is discarded when you switch the feature off.

The application refuses to send anything to an address that is not https.

What Stays On Your Device

When you photograph a sample, the image, the measurements taken from it, and whatever you typed into the form — lot identifier, centre, variety, season, inspector name, moisture reading, meter make, hand counts and notes — are written to the application's own private storage area on your phone. Other applications cannot read this area. We cannot read it either.

When You Share A File

The application can export your records as a CSV file, and can export your photographs and their measurements together as a zip file. Sharing either is an action you take deliberately, using your phone's own share menu, and you choose where it goes. Once you have shared a file, what happens to it is governed by whichever application or service you sent it to.

The export screen shows a link to a Google Drive folder run by this project, so that a phone which never returns to an office still has somewhere to send its measurements. The link opens in your browser or in the Google Drive application. The application itself does not upload anything, holds no account, and cannot put a file in that folder for you — uploading is your action, made with whichever Google account you sign in with. What Google does with a file you upload is governed by Google terms, not by this policy.

Permissions

Camera — used only to photograph the sample in front of you, while the capture screen is open. The application does not use the camera at any other time.

Photographs you already have — the application can also measure a photograph taken earlier. It cannot browse your gallery and holds no permission to do so: it asks the system to show you a picker, and receives only the single image you choose there. Nothing else in your gallery is visible to it.

Internet — used only by the optional "Improve accuracy" feature described above, and only after you switch it on. With the feature off, the application makes no network connection at all.

Deleting Your Data

You can delete any single sample from inside the application. Open Saved samples, tap the sample, and choose Delete. The photograph, the measurements taken from it and any hand count are removed from the phone together.

Switching "Improve accuracy" off discards the random identifier, so nothing sent afterwards can be connected to anything sent before. Uninstalling the application permanently deletes every photograph and record it stored on your phone. To ask for calibration summaries already received to be deleted, write to the address below with the identifier shown on the Improve accuracy screen. That request is a single command on the server (`server/delete_installation.py`), not a manual search through a log file, so it can actually be fulfilled correctly rather than only promised.

Children

This is a professional tool for grain inspection. It is not directed at children.

Changes

If a future version sends anything beyond what is listed above, this policy will be updated before that version is published, and the change will be described in the release notes.
